The Cardimed Project, Climate Adaptation and Resilience Demonstrated In the MEDiterranean region, will allow the experimentation of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in various demonstration sites, including Catania and Ferla. The CARDIMED project is funded under the Horizon Europe 2020 program, launched in September 2023, and involves a partnership of 52 entities.

Recently, the workshop and focus group titled “Nature-Based Solutions for Mitigating Hydraulic Risk in Urban Areas” were held in the “Perrotta” hall of the Bioscience Department of Agriculture, Food, and Environment at the University of Catania.

During the workshop, moderated by Prof. Giuseppe Cirelli, Professor of Agricultural Hydraulics and Hydraulic-Forest Arrangements at the University of Catania and the scientific director of the project, experts and representatives from various professional orders, associations, and researchers participated. These included Eng. Alfio Torrisi, Dr. Enrico Catania, Dr. Mauro Corrao, Lawyer Viola Sorbello, Prof. Salvatore Barbagallo, Prof. Feliciana Licciardello, Eng. Dr. Fabio Masi, Eng. Anacleto Rizzo, and Dr. Liviana Sciuto. During the event, participants visited the green roof of the Bioscience Department of Di3A, realized as part of the Gifluid project.

In the afternoon, a focus group took place, with the enthusiastic participation of about forty professionals and experts who contributed to developing various digital tools to support local and regional authorities in planning, managing, and monitoring SuDS.

Prof. Giuseppe Cirelli announced that the first annual meeting of the Cardimed project would be held in Catania from September 25 to 27 at the Di3A premises. The next meeting is expected to be attended by over one hundred delegates representing the 52 project partners (universities, research centers, local and regional authorities, and private companies) from thirteen different nations (Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Malta, Cyprus, Croatia, the United Kingdom, and Turkey).
