The GIFLUID project continues its commitment to raising awareness about the importance of natural solutions for water treatment and management. On January 29, 2024, the schools of the M. Bartolo High School of Science in Pachino (Siracusa) and the Galileo Galilei High School of Science in Catania participated in the Paths for Cross-Curricular Skills and Guidance (PCTO) module, formerly known as school-work alternation, focused on “Nature-based solutions for water treatment and management”.
Approximately 10 students from classes 4A and 4B of the Bartolo Institute, and about 50 students from classes 3H and 3O of the Galileo Galilei High School, took part in the activities, accompanied by their internal tutors, Campisi Chiara and Tommaso Currò for the Bartolo Institute, and professors Maria Grasso and Valentina Stanzù for the Galileo Galilei High School.
The lesson was conducted by teachers Mirco Milani, Delia Ventura, and Feliciana Licciardello, along with professional experts Salvatore Barresi and Annibale Sicurella. The topics covered aspects of NBS phytodepuration and the reduction of hydraulic risk in urban and non-urban environments.
In addition to the theoretical component, a practical field laboratory session was included, which involved a visit to the Department’s green roof. During this visit, students had the opportunity to explore the various technologies used and the different tree species, guided by Dr. Annibale Sicurella (laborArc), the appointed designer of the green roof at Di3A. This experience allowed them to deepen their understanding of the aspects and benefits that a green roof can bring to the community and stimulated reflection on social aspects, promoting future involvement in multi-generational collaborative projects.
