The publication titled “GREEN ROOFS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN CONTEXT: FROM DESIGN TO MANAGEMENT” is now available online.

Edited by Annibale SICURELLA, Salvatore BARBAGALLO, Giuseppe Luigi CIRELLI, Feliciana LICCIARDELLO, and Liviana SCIUTO, with contributions from Stefano CASCONE, Daniela ROMANO, Vincenzo SCAVERA, and Salvatore BARRESI.

The green roof, also known as a rooftop garden, is a man-made green space that does not have direct contact with natural soil. This system, which integrates plant species within artificial structures, represents an innovative solution for the naturalization of buildings and for improving the balance between architecture and the urban environment.

This volume describes the most suitable technologies for creating green roofs, highlighting their functions from a bio-architectural, urban, environmental, landscape, hydraulic, and energy efficiency perspective. In addition to enhancing city aesthetics, green roofs help compensate for the land lost to construction, promoting a better balance between built-up areas and green spaces.

Thanks to advancements in construction materials, green roofs are now more economically accessible and can even be installed on buildings that were not originally designed for them. Additionally, there are regulations that support these solutions, although further incentives are needed to promote sustainable systems in urban areas.

Green roofs also play a key role in the design of the Green Belt, a green buffer surrounding cities, contributing to the creation of ecological corridors that facilitate wildlife movement and increase urban biodiversity. Furthermore, rooftop gardens can host urban vegetable gardens, promoting sustainable, locally grown food production.

Finally, these systems perform a vital climatic function, helping to reduce the urban heat island effect, which is becoming increasingly critical due to climate change.
