The Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment (Di3A) has initiated an important program of social reintegration and space maintenance, actively involving one of the inmate students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Science and Technology (L-25) program. Under the supervision of Prof. Daniela Ferrarello, Di3A’s contact person for the University of Catania’s University Prison Center (UniCt), the project focuses on the maintenance of the green roof, implemented as part of the Gifluid project in Via santa Sofia in the same department, which aims to combat climate change with natural solutions (NBS).

Department Director Prof. Mario D’Amico, together with Prof. Feliciana Licciardello, warmly welcomed the student. Under the supervision of Professors Giuseppe Cirelli and Giovanni Cascone, student R.C. generously offered his free contribution, demonstrating a strong commitment to eradicating “bad weeds,” symbolic of the need to eradicate negative behaviors to achieve genuine change.

The next step will involve incorporating some plants from the UniCt University Prison Center’s correctional institutions into the green roof. This gesture will be a tangible symbol of integration between the prison environment and academia.

GIFLUID marks a significant step toward a more inclusive and sustainable community in the community, demonstrating the importance of providing opportunities for prisoners to reintegrate and grow personally, joining efforts for a better future.
